DS#4: PORTUGAL - ALGARVE

DS#4: PORTUGAL - ALGARVE

Context

The central Algarve region is characterised by three farming systems: (1) intensive horticilture for avocados, oranges and red fruits with high dependance on irrigation, (2) extensive citrus cultivation, dryland orchards, olive groves and vineyards and (3) low intensity forest-agriculture.

The region faces severe groughts which has forced the governement to enforce water restrictions for the urban and agricultural sectors.

WEFE Nexus adaptation solutions:

Technical innovations

• Implement the HSTI soil moisture sensors to optimise irrigation

• Implement the OASIS App for farmers to assess sustainability and share the best practices

• Test modular filtration system for wastewater treatment.

• Improve wastewater treatment using advanced and nature-based solutions.

• Develop participatory water monitoring through farmers crops and testing new sensors.

• Support and facilitate sharing and demonstration sessions.

Organisational innovations

• Uptake of WEFE agricultural practices: join Agroecology association and traditional farmers for cross-learning, nature-based water solutions and ancient drought resilient practices.

• Create a stable multi-level social forum for capacity building and deliberation of contrasting policy water solutions for the area.

• Strengthen farms added value: direct selling channels, tourism in farms.

Institutional innovations

• Promote paths for participatory water monitoring and collaborative water governance.

• Co-design instruments to encourage the adoption of cross-sectoral solutions.

• Disseminate new instruments and public solutions in the Mediterranean area.
