Context

Description: 

This rural region covers an area of 1,120 km². Irrigated land in the area is mainly planted with olive or fruit trees, and market gardening, with or without fallow land. It is located upstream to the Merguellil catchment.

Socio-economic issues: 

The region is strongly impacted by climate change, particularly with the depletion of water sources during dry periods. These issues are even worsened by increased irrigated areas of horticultural crops.

WEFE resource status: 

• Trade-offs in irrigated agriculture; degradation of soils (erosion, salinity) and groundwater availability; 
• Conflicts on water access in dry periods, worsen by development of solar energy for pumping.
