Context

Description: 

This region (2,100 km2) is characterized by the cultivation of apple trees combined with food crops (e.g. cereals, potatoes) for home consumption, and small-scale sheep and goat farming.

Socio-economic issues: 

The challenge is to develop its local economy to limit rural exodus, with specific challenges in creating agriculture economic value, while limiting negative impacts on farmers’ health and fostering sustainable agri-tourism.

WEFE resource status: 

• Deterioration of water resources (quantitative and qualitative); 
• Adaptation to drought;
• Significant pesticide use; 
• Agricultural intensification tradeoffs: water, energy and environmental issues.
